Easter Bun!

The Jamaican Easter bun is a descendant of the hot cross bun from Britain, traditionally enjoyed on Good Friday, with the cross symbolizing the crucifixion of Jesus. The tradition made its way to Jamaica when they colonized the island in the mid-1600s. Over time, the bun transitioned from the round-ish shape into a loaf, molasses, burnt sugar was substituted for honey and dried fruits added to the batter to make it uniquely Jamaican. Depending on the maker, some still bear a sugared cross today! This is my family’s Panamanian version! 

Ingredients: Organic All-purpose Flour, fresh yeast, molasses, burnt sugar, unsalted butter, dark brown sugar, browning, currants, candied fruit*, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground clove, ground nutmeg, ground allspice, Anise Seeds, Salt, baking powder.

*Candied fruits contain sulfites.
